許多使用者仍舊未將電腦升級為Windows Vista，因為Windows Vista到目前為止給人的印象就是：龐大、難用、不相容、不方便、不友善、不穩定…等等。很不幸的，Windows XP已經被淘汰了，現在大部分的OEM電腦和筆記型電腦，無論何種品牌，例如：HP、DELL、聯想、SONY、TOSHIBA、FUJITEC、宏碁等出貨時預先安裝的都是Windows Vista而不是Windows XP。

更糟糕的是，如果你要求電腦廠商將預先安裝好的Windows Vista變更為合法的Windows XP，反而會被提出告訴，還要賠償。不過微軟到底是否允許降級安裝倒是沒有明確的規定。

根據國外所說明微軟有解釋過：

OEM downgrade rights for desktop PC operating systems apply to Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate as stated in the License Terms. Please note, OEM downgrade versions of Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate are limited to Windows XP Professional (including Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Windows XP x64 Edition). End users can use the following media for their downgrade: Volume Licensing media (provided the end user has a Volume Licensing agreement), retail (FPP), or system builder hologram CD (provided the software is acquired in accordance with the Microsoft OEM System Builder License). Use of the downgraded operating system is governed by the Windows Vista Business License Terms, and the end user cannot use both the downgrade operating system and Windows Vista. There are no downgrade rights granted for Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Home Premium.

大致上的意思是說Windows Vista商業版和Windows Vista旗艦版可以限度的允許降級安裝Windows XP Professional(包括Windows XP Tablet PC Edition和Windows XP x64 Edition)，Windows Vista Home Basic升級版或Windows Vista家庭版並不允許。

沒有任何人願意多付錢另外買一套作業系統，所以已OEM品牌電腦或筆記型電腦所附帶的Windows Vista旗艦版或企業版，如果要降級安裝Windows XP，那就必須用以下的方式來免費啟用Windows XP，而且是屬於合法的行為。

請先抄下你現在電腦所安裝的Windows Vista商業版或終極版的金鑰。一般來說在桌上型電腦的外殼旁邊或筆記型電腦的底下都會貼一張微軟的授權標籤，標籤上就有所安裝的Windows Vista授權金鑰序號，你也可以下載序號檢查器。

  • 拿一片合法的Windows XP lirofessional光碟片開始進行安裝，請勿拿盜版的光碟片。
  • 安裝完畢之後登入
  • 當你登入之後系統會問你是否啟用Windows(或者從開始→所有程式→附屬應用程式→系統管理工具→啟用Windows。
  • 按一下 [是，立即透過網際網路啟用 Windows]。
  • 按一下 [請參閱 Windows 產品啟用隱私權聲明]，按一下 [上一步]，再按 [下一步]。
  • 依照顯示在 [打電話啟用 Windows] 對話方塊中的步驟進行，然後按一下 [下一步]。
  • 依照語音指示，你應選擇與客服人員聯絡，剛開始會被要求輸入產品序號，失敗幾次之後一定會接到客服人員手中。
  • 告訴客服人員，你要從Windows Vista降級到Windows XP，把你原本的Windows Vista序號告訴客服人員，請對方幫你人工啟用。
  • 驗證正確之候客服人員會給你一組啟用碼，你把啟用碼輸入電腦之後就完成了。如果你願意的話，你可以要求一個新的Windows XP啟用碼。
